Under the Covers Girl

This is a piece close to my heart, developed by myself and my wife. We had the pleasure to premiere it at the Art + Literature Laboratory in Madison, WI. Josie developed a program to assist me in animating each frame. I photographed hundreds of fabrics from our closet, along with public domain patterns. We used a combination of footage from early days in our relationship and supplemental footage filmed in our hometown and current apartment. After animating, we edited collaboratively. Sound is taken from a recorded conversation in our many-blanketed bed. Artist statement below:
Under the Covers Girl is a reflection on queer joy and comfort as an extension of the ever-changing nature of the self. Wrapping the viewer in a bundle of fabric and bringing them into the personal dialogue of the artist-couple, the film reimagines intimacy through the lens of safety and coverage.
